Senior 2 laboratory activities

9 units · 18 activities. In every unit, activity 1 is improvised (simple local materials) and activity 2 is conventional (school laboratory equipment): two different experiments. Below are 5 free pages; then get the whole level in one PDF.

  • Title and aim of every experiment
  • Required apparatus and safety notes
  • A clear, labelled drawing of the set-up
  • Step-by-step procedure and a results table to fill in
  • Observation and conclusion
  • Three questions per activity, with sample results and answers at the end of the unit

  1. Unit 1: Trends in Properties of Elements in the Periodic Table
    • 1.1 Improvised · A straw model of atomic radius trends. To build a bar model of atomic radii and see how atomic size changes across a period and down a group.
    • 1.2 Conventional · Reactivity of magnesium and calcium. To compare the reactivity of two group II metals with water and with dilute acid.
  2. Unit 2: Chemical Bonding
    • 2.1 Improvised · Giving and sharing: a bottle-top model of bonding. To model ionic bonding (transfer of electrons) and covalent bonding (sharing of electrons) with learners and bottle tops.
    • 2.2 Conventional · Comparing ionic and covalent substances. To compare the melting, solubility and electrical conductivity of an ionic and some covalent substances.
  3. Unit 3: Categories of Chemical Reactions
    • 3.1 Improvised · Lime water from builder’s lime: a precipitation reaction. To make lime water from builder’s lime and use it to observe a precipitation reaction with the carbon dioxide in our breath.
    • 3.2 Conventional · Displacement reactions of metals. To find which metals displace others from solutions of their salts and to arrange them in order of reactivity.
  4. Unit 4: Mineral Salts: Properties, Preparation and Uses
    • 4.1 Improvised · Growing a crystal on a thread. To grow a large crystal of alum (or common salt) from a saturated solution.
    • 4.2 Conventional · Preparing copper(II) sulfate crystals. To prepare a soluble salt by reacting an insoluble base with a dilute acid.
  5. Unit 5: The Mole Concept
    • 5.1 Improvised · Counting beans by weighing: a model of the mole. To show how large numbers of small objects can be counted by weighing, as chemists count atoms using the mole.
    • 5.2 Conventional · Finding the formula of magnesium oxide. To find the empirical formula of magnesium oxide from the masses of magnesium and oxygen that combine.
  6. Unit 6: Preparation of Oxygen and its Properties
    • 6.1 Improvised · Oxygen from hydrogen peroxide and yeast. To produce oxygen by decomposing hydrogen peroxide with a natural catalyst (yeast) and test for it.
    • 6.2 Conventional · Preparing and collecting oxygen. To prepare oxygen from hydrogen peroxide using manganese(IV) oxide as a catalyst, collect it over water and examine its properties.
  7. Unit 7: Preparation and Classification of Oxides
    • 7.1 Improvised · Acidic and basic oxides at home. To show that a metal oxide (in wood ash) gives a basic solution and a non-metal oxide (carbon dioxide) gives an acidic solution.
    • 7.2 Conventional · Burning elements in oxygen and testing the oxides. To prepare oxides by burning elements in oxygen and classify them using universal indicator.
  8. Unit 8: Electrolytes and Non-electrolytes
    • 8.1 Improvised · An LED tester for household liquids. To make a simple conductivity tester and classify household liquids as electrolytes or non-electrolytes.
    • 8.2 Conventional · Strong and weak electrolytes: measuring the current. To compare the conductivity of solutions of equal concentration by measuring the current through them.
  9. Unit 9: Chemical Properties of Acids and Bases
    • 9.1 Improvised · How much antacid neutralises vinegar?. To neutralise an acid with a base using a plant indicator to show when neutralisation is complete.
    • 9.2 Conventional · Typical reactions of a dilute acid. To investigate the reactions of dilute hydrochloric acid with a metal, a carbonate, an alkali and a metal oxide.
