Building lab: a cool classroom or a hot one?

Under an iron roof, afternoon lessons can be too hot to learn. Design a classroom that stays comfortable without air conditioning.

🎯 Aim

To investigate how roofs, walls, windows, ventilation and shade affect the temperature inside a building during the day.

You will learn to

  • Explain conduction, convection and radiation in buildings.
  • Calculate heat flow with Q = U A ΔT.
  • Explain thermal mass and insulation.
  • Design a comfortable, low-cost classroom.

🧭 What to do

  1. Start with Iron sheets, no ceiling: read the hottest temperature inside.
  2. Change the Roof, then the Walls: compare the red line.
  3. Try the Ventilation and Shade trees options.
  4. Find a design that stays below 28 °C all day.
  5. Answer the questions with the class data.
  6. Write your conclusion and download your lab report.

🔬 Lab bench

📋 The data

Temperatures measured in two classrooms of the same school on a sunny day.

🧠 Investigate: answer from the data

Type your answer and tap Check. Use 💡 Hint first; open the method only when you are stuck.

📄 My lab report

Your report collects the aim, your data table, the graphs, your answers and your conclusion. It is made on your phone or computer: nothing is sent to anyone.

Check your conclusion

An iron roof without a ceiling absorbs a lot of sunshine and conducts it into the room, so the classroom can be 10 °C hotter than outside in the afternoon. A ceiling, a light-coloured roof, heavy brick or mud walls (thermal mass), cross-ventilation and shade trees keep the room comfortable. Heat flow follows Q = U A ΔT: a lower U-value means less heat.
