🎯 Aim

To use an SIR model to study how an infectious disease spreads, and how vaccination and hygiene reduce or stop an outbreak.

You will learn to

  • Explain R₀ and the effective reproduction number.
  • Describe exponential growth at the start of an outbreak.
  • Calculate the herd immunity threshold 1 − 1/R₀.
  • Explain how vaccination and hygiene change the curve.

🧭 What to do

  1. Read the graph for R₀ = 3: when is the peak?
  2. Move the day slider under the graph and watch the people.
  3. Increase R₀: what happens to the peak and the total?
  4. Increase Vaccinated before the outbreak until the outbreak stops.
  5. Try Hand washing, masks and staying home when sick. Answer the questions.
  6. Write your conclusion and download your lab report.

📋 The data

Example weekly cases in an outbreak (made for learning, not official figures).

🧠 Investigate: answer from the data

Type your answer and tap Check. Use 💡 Hint first; open the method only when you are stuck.

📄 My lab report

Your report collects the aim, your data table, the graphs, your answers and your conclusion. It is made on your phone or computer: nothing is sent to anyone.

Check your conclusion

At first the number of cases grows exponentially. The outbreak slows and stops when so many people are immune that each sick person infects fewer than one other (effective R below 1). If at least 1 − 1/R₀ of the population is vaccinated (75 % for R₀ = 4, about 93 % for measles), the outbreak cannot grow: herd immunity. Hygiene lowers the peak and delays it.
