Oxygen, oxides and acid rain lab

The oxygen we breathe, the lime farmers spread and the rain that damages buildings are linked by the chemistry of oxides.

🎯 Aim

To investigate the preparation of oxygen, the nature of oxides and the formation of acid rain.

You will learn to

  • Prepare and test oxygen.
  • Calculate the volume of gas from moles.
  • Classify oxides as acidic, basic, amphoteric or neutral.
  • Explain the causes and effects of acid rain.

🧭 What to do

  1. Choose a Catalyst and read the oxygen graph.
  2. Change the amount of hydrogen peroxide: how does the final volume change?
  3. Choose each Oxide and read its pH in water.
  4. Increase the SO₂ in the air and read the pH of the rain.
  5. Answer the questions with the class data.
  6. Write your conclusion and download your lab report.

📋 The data

Oxygen collected from H₂O₂ with MnO₂.

📄 My lab report

Your report collects the aim, your data table, the graphs, your answers and your conclusion. It is made on your phone or computer: nothing is sent to anyone.

Check your conclusion

Hydrogen peroxide decomposes to water and oxygen; MnO₂ and the enzyme catalase speed it up, but boiled liver does not because the enzyme is denatured. Metal oxides are basic, non-metal oxides acidic, and Al₂O₃ and ZnO amphoteric. SO₂ and NO₂ from burning fuels dissolve in rain to form acids that damage buildings, soils, forests and lakes.
