Nerves lab: reaction time and impulses

How fast are you? Catch a falling ruler, measure your reaction time and discover how nerve impulses travel.

🎯 Aim

To measure reaction time and investigate the speed of nerve impulses.

You will learn to

  • Measure reaction time with the ruler-drop test.
  • Calculate time from distance fallen.
  • Explain saltatory conduction.
  • Describe reflex arcs and synapses.

🧭 What to do

  1. Tap Ready, wait for the ruler to fall, then tap Catch!
  2. Repeat ten times and read your mean reaction time.
  3. Choose a Neurone and change the Axon diameter.
  4. Read the time for the impulse to travel.
  5. Answer the questions with the class data.
  6. Write your conclusion and download your lab report.

📄 My lab report

Your report collects the aim, your data table, the graphs, your answers and your conclusion. It is made on your phone or computer: nothing is sent to anyone.

Check your conclusion

The distance the ruler falls gives reaction time with t = √(2d ÷ g), about 0.15 to 0.25 s; practice makes it shorter. Impulses travel much faster in thick, myelinated axons because they jump between nodes of Ranvier. Reflexes are fast because they use a short path through the spinal cord; synapses pass the signal one way using neurotransmitters.
