Unit 3 Linear functions, equations and inequalities

Key unit competence: Apply linear equations and inequalities in solving real-life problems.

Key ideas

  • On a number line, numbers increase to the right. In the Cartesian plane a point is written : is measured along the horizontal axis, along the vertical axis, from the origin .
  • A linear function has the form : is the gradient (slope) and is the y-intercept. Its graph is a straight line; two points are enough to draw it.
  • The x-intercept is found by putting ; the y-intercept by putting ; for it is .
  • The gradient between and is . Positive : the line rises; negative : it falls; : horizontal.
  • Like terms have the same variables with the same powers; only like terms can be added or subtracted. When substituting, use brackets.
  • To solve a linear equation: expand brackets, clear fractions using the LCM, collect -terms on one side, then divide by the coefficient. Check by substituting.
  • Linear inequalities are solved like equations, but multiplying or dividing by a negative number reverses the sign. Solutions are shown on a number line (open circle for ; closed circle for ) or as intervals such as or .
  • Key words: "more than" , "less than" , "at least" , "at most" .

Formulas to know

Common misconceptions

  • "To solve , divide by and get ." No: dividing by a negative reverses the sign: .
  • "." No: ; we add coefficients of like terms, the power does not change.
  • "In , the x-intercept is ." No: is the y-intercept. Set : , so the x-intercept is .

Worked examples

Example 1. Solve .

Solution

Multiply every term by 20: .

, so .

Example 2. Solve and write the solution as an interval.

Solution

gives , . gives , .

So , the interval .

Practice questions

Easier and harder questions are mixed, just like in a real exam.

  1. Find the x- and y-intercepts of and sketch the line.

    Show answer

    y-intercept . Put : , , x-intercept . Join the two points.

Common mistake: Giving the gradient as an intercept.

  2. Solve and give the solution as an interval.

    Show answer

    Multiply by 6: , so : interval .

Common mistake: Multiplying only the left side by 6.

  3. Find the gradient of the line through and .

    Show answer

    .

Common mistake: Subtracting the coordinates in different orders on top and bottom.

  4. The perimeter of a rectangle is 46 cm. The length is 5 cm more than the width. Find the dimensions.

    Show answer

    , , . Width 9 cm, length 14 cm.

Common mistake: Using and forgetting the factor 2.

  5. If , and , evaluate .

    Show answer

    .

Common mistake: Losing a negative sign during substitution.

  6. Peter buys tools at 2 500 FRW each and pays 3 000 FRW for transport. He can spend at most 28 000 FRW. How many tools can he buy?

    Show answer

    , , . At most 10 tools.

Common mistake: Writing for "at most".

  7. Solve .

    Show answer

    , , .

Common mistake: Writing instead of .

  8. Solve and represent on a number line: .

    Show answer

, , . Open circle at 3 and arrow to the right.

Common mistake: Using a closed circle for a strict inequality.

Matching and drag-and-drop

  1. Matching

Match each item in column A with the correct answer in column B. Write the letter next to each number.

    Column AColumn B
    1. A taxi charges 1 000 FRW plus 400 FRW per km. A ride costs 5 800 FRW. How long was it?a.
    2. If , and , find .b.
    3. Solve .c. 12 km
    4. Find the x-intercept of .d. 6
    Show answer

    1 → c (12 km) · 2 → d (6) · 3 → b () · 4 → a ()

    • Step 1. .
      Step 2. , so km.
    • .
    • Step 1. .
      Step 2. So .
    • Step 1. Put : .
      Step 2. So .
  2. Drag and drop
