Unit 5 Thales theorems

Key unit competence: Apply Thales' theorem in solving problems related to similar triangles and trapezia.

Key ideas

  • Midpoint theorem: the segment joining the midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side and half its length.
  • Thales' theorem (triangle): if a line parallel to one side of a triangle cuts the other two sides, it divides them proportionally. In with , and : and .
  • Thales in a trapezium: a line parallel to the parallel sides of a trapezium divides the non-parallel sides proportionally.
  • Converse: if a line divides two sides of a triangle in the same ratio, it is parallel to the third side. If the ratios are different, the line is not parallel.
  • To solve length problems: identify the parallel lines, write ratios starting from the same vertex, cross-multiply and solve.

Formulas to know

Common misconceptions

  • "." No: compares with the whole sides: .
  • "Any line across a triangle divides the sides proportionally." Only a line parallel to the third side does.

Worked examples

Example 1. In , with on , on . , , . Find .

Solution

.

Example 2. and are midpoints of and , and cm. Find .

Solution

By the midpoint theorem, and cm.

Practice questions

Easier and harder questions are mixed, just like in a real exam.

  1. State the midpoint theorem and draw a diagram.

    Show answer

In , if and are the midpoints of and , then and .

    Common mistake: Saying .

  2. , , , , . Find .

    Show answer

    : , .

    Common mistake: Cross-multiplying incorrectly.

  3. In , , cm, cm and cm. Find and .

    Show answer

    , so cm and cm.

Common mistake: Using with the whole side .

  4. The diagonals of a quadrilateral join the midpoints of its sides. Explain why the quadrilateral formed by joining the midpoints of the sides of any quadrilateral is a parallelogram.

    Show answer

Draw diagonal . In triangles and , the midpoint segments are each parallel to and equal to . So two opposite sides are parallel and equal: a parallelogram.

Common mistake: Assuming the original quadrilateral is a rectangle.

  5. In , , , and . Find .

    Show answer

    , .

Common mistake: Using instead of .

  6. A vertical stick 1.5 m high casts a 2 m shadow. A building casts a 24 m shadow at the same time. Find the height of the building.

    Show answer

    , m.

    Common mistake: Setting up .

  7. , , , . Show that .

    Show answer

and . Equal ratios, so (converse of Thales).

Common mistake: Comparing with instead of the ratios.

  8. In trapezium , , on , on , , , . Find and .

    Show answer

    , , .

    Common mistake: Forgetting that .
