Unit 7 Vectors

Key unit competence: Examine vectors in the plane in solving related problems.

Key ideas

  • A vector has both magnitude (size) and direction; a scalar has only magnitude (mass, time). Displacement, velocity and force are vectors.
  • A vector from to is written . In the plane it is written as a column vector : steps right (negative: left), steps up (negative: down).
  • If and , then . The position vector of is .
  • Special vectors: the null vector ; unit vectors , ; the opposite of is ().
  • Equal vectors have the same magnitude and direction (same components). Addition: triangle law ; add components.
  • Scalar multiplication: . If the direction is reversed.
  • Magnitude: . The distance . Midpoint of : .

Formulas to know

Common misconceptions

  • "." No: they have the same length but opposite directions: .
  • " = coordinates of minus coordinates of ." No: it is end minus start: .
  • "." Not in general; it is only true when the vectors have the same direction.

Common mistake: Writing with the wrong order of letters.

  8. Show that , , , form a parallelogram.

    Show answer

and . Equal vectors, so and are parallel and equal: is a parallelogram.

Common mistake: Comparing with (opposite vectors).

Matching and drag-and-drop

  1. Matching

Match each item in column A with the correct answer in column B. Write the letter next to each number.

    Column AColumn B
    1. Find if .a. 10
    2. and . Find .b.
    3. Find the distance between and .c.
    4. is the midpoint of with and . Find .d.
    Show answer

    1 → c () · 2 → b () · 3 → a (10) · 4 → d ()

    • Step 1. , so .
      Step 2. or .
    • Step 1. and .
      Step 2. Subtract: .
    • , length .
    • .
  2. Drag and drop

Choose the correct word or phrase from the box for each gap. One word in the box is not needed.

     ·   ·   ·  twice as long
    1. compared with is .
    2. If equals , then .
    3. Find . →
    Show answer

    1: twice as long · 2: · 3:

    • .
    • Equal vectors have equal components.
    • Multiply each component by 3.
  3. Matching

Match each item in column A with the correct answer in column B. Write the letter next to each number.

    Column AColumn B
    1. If , then a.
    2. Find the midpoint of and .b.
    3. Find and if .c.
    4. Write as a column vector.d.
    Show answer

    1 → b () · 2 → a () · 3 → d () · 4 → c ()

    • Reverse the direction: change both signs.
    • .
    • Step 1. and , so .
      Step 2. , .
    • Coefficient of on top, of below.
  4. Drag and drop

Choose the correct word or phrase from the box for each gap. One word in the box is not needed.
