Unit 3 Number bases

Key unit competence: Solve problems involving conversion, operations and equations of number bases.

Key ideas

  • A number is an idea; a numeral is the symbol for it; a digit is one symbol. In base , the digits are and place values are powers of .
  • Base ten to base : divide repeatedly by and read the remainders from bottom to top.
  • Base to base ten: expand with place values, e.g. .
  • Between two non-decimal bases, go through base ten (or group binary digits: 3 binary digits = 1 octal digit).
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide in base as in base ten, but carry or borrow , not 10.
  • Equations in bases: convert each numeral to base ten in terms of the unknown, then solve. Example: means , so .

Formulas to know

Common misconceptions

  • " is a numeral." No: base five uses only the digits 0 to 4.
  • "Read the remainders from top to bottom." No: the first remainder is the units digit, so read upwards.
  • "In base two, ." No: .

Worked examples

Example 1. Convert 45 to base two.

Solution

r1; r0; r1; r1; r0; r1. Reading upwards: .

Example 2. Find the base if .

Solution

, so . Check: digits 3 and 4 are allowed in base 6.
