🎯 Aim

To identify organic compounds by testing for their functional groups.

You will learn to

  • Describe the test and result for each functional group.
  • Record observations in a table.
  • Deduce the identity of an unknown compound.
  • Write equations for key tests.

🧭 What to do

  1. Choose an Unknown and a Test, then tap Do the test.
  2. Do all seven tests on the same unknown and read your table.
  3. Choose its group under Identify and tap Check.
  4. Repeat for the other unknowns.
  5. Answer the questions with the class data.
  6. Write your conclusion and download your lab report.

📋 The data

Results are recorded as you do the tests.

🧠 Investigate: answer from the data

Type your answer and tap Check. Use 💡 Hint first; open the method only when you are stuck.

📄 My lab report

Your report collects the aim, your data table, the graphs, your answers and your conclusion. It is made on your phone or computer: nothing is sent to anyone.

Check your conclusion

Alkenes decolourise bromine water; primary and secondary alcohols and aldehydes turn acidified dichromate from orange to green; aldehydes and ketones give an orange precipitate with 2,4-DNPH, but only aldehydes give a silver mirror; acids fizz with NaHCO₃; halogenoalkanes give a silver halide precipitate after hydrolysis; amines are basic.
