Relativity lab: time dilation, muons and GPS

The GPS in every phone needs Einstein’s relativity to work. See how moving clocks run slow and why it matters every day.

🎯 Aim

To investigate time dilation and length contraction in special relativity and their use in GPS.

You will learn to

  • State the postulates of special relativity.
  • Calculate the Lorentz factor.
  • Use time dilation and length contraction.
  • Explain why GPS needs relativity.

🧭 What to do

  1. Set the speed to 0.60 c and read γ.
  2. Increase the speed towards 0.99 c: watch the ship’s clock and length.
  3. Read the time passed on Earth for a 10-year trip.
  4. Look at the graph of γ against speed.
  5. Answer the questions with the class data.
  6. Write your conclusion and download your lab report.

📋 The data

Muons and GPS satellites.

🧠 Investigate: answer from the data

Type your answer and tap Check. Use 💡 Hint first; open the method only when you are stuck.

📄 My lab report

Your report collects the aim, your data table, the graphs, your answers and your conclusion. It is made on your phone or computer: nothing is sent to anyone.

Check your conclusion

Because the speed of light is the same for all observers, moving clocks run slow by the factor γ = 1 ÷ √(1 − v²/c²) and moving objects are shortened. The effect is tiny at everyday speeds but large near c: it lets muons reach the ground and it must be corrected in GPS satellites.
