Unit 3 Simultaneous linear equations

Key unit competence: Solve problems related to simultaneous linear equations.

Key ideas

  • A system of two linear equations in and is solved by finding the pair that satisfies both equations at the same time.
  • Types of systems: one solution (the lines intersect), no solution (parallel lines), infinitely many solutions (the same line).
  • Substitution: make one variable the subject of one equation and substitute it into the other.
  • Elimination: multiply the equations so that one variable has equal (or opposite) coefficients, then subtract (or add).
  • Comparison: make the same variable the subject of both equations and set them equal.
  • Cramer's rule for , : , , (if ).
  • Graphical method: draw both lines; the solution is the point of intersection.
  • Word problems: name the two unknowns, write two equations from the information, solve, then check in the story.

Formulas to know

Common misconceptions

  • "If I find the system is solved." No: you must also find and check both in the original equations.
  • "Parallel lines give infinitely many solutions." No: distinct parallel lines never meet, so there is no solution.

Worked examples

Example 1. Solve and .

Solution

Adding: , . Then . Solution .

Example 2. 3 pens and 2 books cost 2 100 FRW; 1 pen and 4 books cost 3 200 FRW. Find each price.

Solution

and . From the second, .

, . A pen costs 200 FRW and a book 750 FRW.

Practice questions

Easier and harder questions are mixed, just like in a real exam.

  1. Solve by substitution: and .

    Show answer

    , , .

Common mistake: Forgetting to find .

  2. The ages of a mother and her daughter add to 50. Five years ago the mother was 4 times as old as her daughter. Find their ages now.

    Show answer

    and . , , .

Common mistake: Subtracting 5 from only one age.

  3. Solve by elimination: and .

    Show answer

    Double the first: ; add the second: , ; then , . Solution .

Common mistake: Adding equations without first matching the coefficients.

  4. Show that the system and has no solution.

    Show answer

Multiply the first by : , but the second says . Contradiction: parallel lines, no solution.

Common mistake: Concluding there are infinitely many solutions.

  5. Solve by Cramer's rule: and .

    Show answer

    ; ; . Solution .

Common mistake: Getting the sign of wrong.

  6. Mukamana bought 4 notebooks and 3 pens for 2 600 FRW. Gatete bought 2 notebooks and 5 pens for 2 000 FRW. Find each price.

    Show answer

    , . Double the second and subtract: , , .

Common mistake: Mixing up which coefficient belongs to which item.

  7. Solve graphically and .

    Show answer

The lines meet at : check and .

Common mistake: Plotting only one point per line, giving inaccurate lines.

  8. The perimeter of a rectangle is 34 cm and its length is 5 cm more than its width. Find its dimensions.

    Show answer

    , : , cm, cm.

    Common mistake: Using .

Matching and drag-and-drop

  1. Matching

Match each item in column A with the correct answer in column B. Write the letter next to each number.

    Column AColumn B
    1. Solve and by comparison.a.
    2. Solve and .b.
    3. Solve and .c.
    4. Solve and .d.
    Show answer

    1 → b () · 2 → c () · 3 → d () · 4 → a ()

    • Step 1. .
      Step 2. .
      Step 3. .
    • Step 1. .
      Step 2. .
    • Step 1. Multiply by 3 and 2: and . Add: , .
      Step 2. , so .
    • Step 1. From the second .
      Step 2. gives .
      Step 3. .
  2. Drag and drop

Choose the correct word or phrase from the box for each gap. One word in the box is not needed.

     ·  has no unique solution  ·  infinitely many solutions  ·
    1. The system and has .
    2. If in Cramer's rule, the system .
    3. Solve and . →
    Show answer

    1: infinitely many solutions · 2: has no unique solution · 3:

    • The second equation is twice the first: they are the same line.
    • The lines are parallel or the same; there is no unique solution.
    • Step 1. Adding: .
      Step 2. .
      Step 3. Then .
      Step 4. .
  3. Matching

Match each item in column A with the correct answer in column B. Write the letter next to each number.

    Column AColumn B
    1. Solve and .a. 13 and 7
    2. The sum of two numbers is 20 and their difference is 6. What are the numbers?b. 700 FRW
    3. Solve and .c.
    4. 3 pens and 2 books cost 2 600 FRW; 1 pen and 3 books cost 2 500 FRW. Find the price of a book.d.
    Show answer

    1 → d () · 2 → a (13 and 7) · 3 → c () · 4 → b (700 FRW)

    • Subtract: ; then .
    • Step 1. .
      Step 2. gives .
