Senior 1 practical activities
8 units · 16 activities. In every unit, activity 1 is improvised (simple local materials) and activity 2 is conventional (mathematical instruments): two different activities. Below are 5 free pages; then get the whole level in one PDF.
- Title and aim of every activity
- Required materials and safety notes
- A clear, diagram or diagram
- Step-by-step procedure and a results table to fill in
- Observation and conclusion
- Three questions per activity, with sample results and answers at the end of the unit

- Unit 1: Introduction to Sets
- 1.1 Improvised · Sorting bottle tops into sets with string loops. To sort objects into sets using two overlapping loops and to describe the intersection, union and complement.
- 1.2 Conventional · A class survey on a Venn diagram. To collect data from a class survey and represent it accurately on a Venn diagram drawn with compasses.
- Unit 2: Sets of Numbers
- 2.1 Improvised · A rope number line. To place integers, fractions and decimals on a number line and to classify them into ℕ, ℤ, ℚ.
- 2.2 Conventional · Fractions to decimals: terminating or recurring?. To convert fractions to decimals with a calculator, place them on an accurately scaled number line, and find which fractions terminate.
- Unit 3: Linear Functions, Equations and Inequalities
- 3.1 Improvised · Matchstick patterns and linear rules. To find a linear rule from a growing pattern and use it to solve an equation.
- 3.2 Conventional · Graph of a taxi-moto fare. To draw the graph of a linear function from a real tariff and use it to solve equations and inequalities.
- Unit 4: Ratio and Proportions
- 4.1 Improvised · How tall is that tree? Shadows and proportion. To use the ratio of height to shadow length to find the height of a tall object.
- 4.2 Conventional · A scale drawing of the classroom. To make an accurate scale drawing of the classroom and use it to find real distances.
- Unit 5: Percentage, Discount, Profit and Loss
- 5.1 Improvised · The class shop. To calculate discounts, profit and loss through a shop role-play.
- 5.2 Conventional · Percentages and a pie chart. To change survey data into percentages and draw an accurate pie chart with a protractor.
- Unit 6: Points, Lines and Angles
- 6.1 Improvised · Folding paper and crossing sticks. To make perpendicular and parallel lines by folding paper and to discover the properties of vertically opposite angles.
- 6.2 Conventional · Constructions with ruler and compasses. To construct a perpendicular bisector, an angle bisector and angles of 60° and 90° with ruler and compasses only.
- Unit 7: Statistics with Ungrouped Data
- 7.1 Improvised · Our hand spans. To collect hand-span data and find the mean, median, mode and range.
- 7.2 Conventional · Reaction distances with a ruler. To measure reaction distances with a ruler and display and analyse the data.
- Unit 8: Elementary Probability
- 8.1 Improvised · Tossing bottle tops. To estimate the probability that a bottle top lands open side up by experiment.
- 8.2 Conventional · Constructing a fair spinner. To construct a spinner with sectors of given probabilities using compasses and a protractor and to compare theory with experiment.
