Senior 3 practical activities
14 units · 28 activities. In every unit, activity 1 is improvised (simple local materials) and activity 2 is conventional (mathematical instruments): two different activities. Below are 5 free pages; then get the whole level in one PDF.
- Title and aim of every activity
- Required materials and safety notes
- A clear, diagram or diagram
- Step-by-step procedure and a results table to fill in
- Observation and conclusion
- Three questions per activity, with sample results and answers at the end of the unit

- 1.2 Conventional · Solving a survey problem with a three-set Venn diagram. To draw a three-set Venn diagram accurately and use an unknown x to solve a problem.
- Unit 2: Quadratic Equations
- 2.1 Improvised · The string-loop garden. To find the dimensions of a rectangle with a given perimeter and area by forming and solving a quadratic equation.
- 2.2 Conventional · Solving a quadratic by graph and by formula. To solve a quadratic equation from its graph and check with the quadratic formula on a calculator.
- Unit 3: Number Bases
- 3.1 Improvised · Bundling sticks in fives. To understand place value in base five by grouping sticks.
- 3.2 Conventional · Binary cards and the calculator. To convert numbers between base ten and base two using place-value cards and to check with a calculator.
- Unit 4: Algebraic Fractions
- 4.1 Improvised · Filling a bucket with two bottles. To model "work together" problems with algebraic fractions.
- 4.2 Conventional · Where is the fraction undefined? Tables and graphs. To show with a table and a graph that a simplified algebraic fraction is equal to the original except where the denominator is zero.
- Unit 5: Simultaneous Linear Inequalities
- 5.1 Improvised · Shopping rules on a floor grid. To find all whole-number solutions of a pair of inequalities by testing points on a chalk grid.

- 6.1 Improvised · A parabola by paper folding. To produce a parabola by folding paper and to see that it is the set of points equidistant from a point and a line.
- 6.2 Conventional · Where a line meets a parabola. To draw a linear and a quadratic function on the same axes and solve the simultaneous equations from their intersection.
- Unit 7: Compound Interest, Reverse Percentage and Compound Proportional Change
- 7.1 Improvised · An ikimina savings game. To compare simple and compound interest using paper money.
- 7.2 Conventional · Depreciation of a motorbike. To calculate and graph compound decrease (depreciation) and use reverse percentages.
- Unit 8: Right-Angled Triangles
- 8.1 Improvised · A home-made clinometer. To make a clinometer and use the tangent ratio to find the height of a building.
- 8.2 Conventional · Measuring sine, cosine and tangent. To find the trigonometric ratios of 30°, 45° and 60° by measuring triangles, and compare with calculator values.
