Senior 2 laboratory activities
14 units · 28 activities. In every unit, activity 1 is improvised (simple local materials) and activity 2 is conventional (school laboratory equipment): two different experiments. Below are 5 free pages; then get the whole level in one PDF.
- Title and aim of every experiment
- Required apparatus and safety notes
- A clear, labelled drawing of the set-up
- Step-by-step procedure and a results table to fill in
- Observation and conclusion
- Three questions per activity, with sample results and answers at the end of the unit

- Unit 1: Classification of Kingdom Animalia
- 1.1 Improvised · Animal hunt with a home-made net and trap. To collect small animals from the school compound and sort them into phyla and classes.
- 1.2 Conventional · External features of a bony fish. To examine the external features of a fish and relate them to its classification and way of life.
- Unit 2: Introduction to Environmental Biology
- 2.1 Improvised · A string quadrat on the school field. To estimate the number and cover of plant species using a home-made quadrat.
- 2.2 Conventional · Measuring abiotic factors in two habitats. To measure and compare abiotic factors in a shaded and an open habitat.
- Unit 3: Transport across the Cell Membrane
- 3.1 Improvised · The naked egg: osmosis through a membrane. To show osmosis by placing an egg without its shell in water and in a concentrated sugar solution.
- 3.2 Conventional · Osmosis in potato tissue. To find the concentration of sucrose solution that has the same water potential as potato cells.
- Unit 4: Identification of Food Components
- 4.1 Improvised · How much water is in our food?. To find the percentage of water in different foods by drying them.
- 4.2 Conventional · Testing fruits for vitamin C with DCPIP. To compare the vitamin C content of fruit juices using DCPIP solution.
- Unit 5: Enzymes
- 5.1 Improvised · Pineapple stops jelly setting. To show that fresh pineapple contains an enzyme that digests protein and that boiling destroys it.
- 5.2 Conventional · Effect of temperature on amylase. To investigate how temperature affects the rate of starch digestion by amylase.
- Unit 6: Photosynthesis
- 6.1 Improvised · Floating leaf discs. To show that leaves produce oxygen in the light by photosynthesis.
- 6.2 Conventional · Is light needed to make starch?. To show that starch is made only in parts of a leaf that receive light.
- Unit 7: Transport in Plants
- 7.1 Improvised · Catching transpired water in a bag. To show that leaves lose water vapour (transpiration).
- 7.2 Conventional · Measuring transpiration with a potometer. To measure the rate of water uptake by a leafy shoot in still air and in moving air.
- Unit 8: Gaseous Exchange in Humans and Plants
- 8.1 Improvised · Breathing before and after exercise. To measure how exercise affects breathing rate and depth.
- 8.2 Conventional · Counting stomata on leaf surfaces. To compare the number of stomata on the upper and lower surfaces of a leaf.
- Unit 9: Excretion in Humans
- 9.1 Improvised · A filter model of the kidney. To model how the kidney filters blood, keeping large particles and letting small ones pass.
- 9.2 Conventional · Dissection of a mammalian kidney. To identify the external and internal structure of a mammal’s kidney.
- Unit 10: Joints and Movement
- 10.1 Improvised · A cardboard arm with string muscles. To build a model showing how antagonistic muscles move the forearm at the elbow.
- 10.2 Conventional · Tendons and movement in a chicken foot. To show how pulling tendons moves bones at joints.
- Unit 11: Infectious Diseases, Immunity and Vaccination
- 11.1 Improvised · Glitter germs and handwashing. To show how germs spread by touch and how well washing removes them.
- 11.2 Conventional · White blood cells in a blood smear. To identify red and white blood cells in a prepared blood smear and relate white cells to immunity.
- Unit 12: Sexual Behaviour and Sexual Response
- 12.1 Improvised · Where do I stand? A values line. To explore personal values and the influences on sexual behaviour in a respectful, safe discussion.
- 12.2 Conventional · Distraction, alcohol and judgement: a reaction-time test. To measure how distraction slows reactions and relate this to how alcohol and pressure impair judgement in risky situations.
- Unit 13: Pregnancy Prevention
- 13.1 Improvised · Fact or myth? A card sort. To check knowledge about how pregnancy happens and how it can be prevented, using accurate information.
- 13.2 Conventional · Hormones of the menstrual cycle: a data study. To plot and interpret hormone data for the menstrual cycle and identify when ovulation occurs.
- Unit 14: Reducing Risk of STIs and HIV, Care and Support
- 14.1 Improvised · A care and support plan. To plan practical ways a family, school and community can support a person living with HIV and reduce stigma.
- 14.2 Conventional · How a rapid test works: a paper-strip model. To model how a rapid diagnostic test strip shows a positive or negative result with test and control lines.
