Biology simulations

Change the variables, read the results at once and see what happens. Every simulation comes with a virtual lab: steps, a results table, a graph and questions with answers. They work on any phone, tablet or computer. All simulations are free: no payment and no account.

Virtual microscope

Put a slide on the stage, choose an objective and focus. Measure the field of view and estimate the real size of cells.

  • Levels: S1 · S4 (also S3 · S5)
  • You measure: Field of view (mm), number of cells across, cell size (µm), mitotic index (%).
  • Time: about 35–45 min · Free

Enzymes: temperature and pH

Mix starch with amylase in a water bath, test a drop with iodine every 30 seconds and find how fast the starch disappears at different temperatures and pH.

  • Levels: S2 · S4 (also S3)
  • You measure: Time to the end point (s) at different temperatures, pH values and concentrations; then rate = 1000 ÷ t.
  • Time: about 35–45 min · Free

Paper chromatography

Spot food colours, inks or leaf extract on a paper, let the solvent rise, then measure how far each spot moved and identify the dyes by their Rf values.

  • Levels: S1 · S5
  • You measure: Distance moved by each spot and by the solvent front (cm); then Rf values.
  • Time: about 30–40 min · Free

Diffusion and surface area

Drop pink agar cubes of different sizes into dilute acid, time how long each takes to go colourless, and discover why big organisms cannot rely on diffusion alone.

  • Levels: S2 · S5 (also S1)
  • You measure: Time for each block to become colourless (s); then SA, V and SA : V for each block.
  • Time: about 30–40 min · Free

Population growth

Count yeast cells as they grow in a flask, then watch impala and lion numbers rise and fall together in Akagera.

  • Levels: S3 · S6 (also S4)
  • You measure: Cells counted every 6 hours and population density; impala and lion numbers each year.
  • Time: about 35–45 min · Free

Natural selection

Let birds hunt beetles on dark or light soil, breed the survivors and watch the population change colour.

  • Levels: S3 · S6 (also S5)
  • You measure: Numbers of dark and light beetles and the frequency of allele D in each generation.
  • Time: about 25–35 min · Free

Each simulation opens with its virtual lab on the same page: the steps, a results table, a graph and questions with answers. Teachers: every simulation has a “For teachers” section with expected results.
