Motion data lab: a moto-taxi ride
A moto-taxi rider in Kigali records a short ride with a phone GPS app: start, steady speed, braking for a speed bump, and stopping at the stage. Use the data like a physicist and a road-safety officer.

🎯 Aim
To analyse the motion of a moto from speed–time data: find accelerations from gradients and distances from areas under the velocity–time graph.
You will learn to
- Plot and read a velocity–time graph from real-style data.
- Calculate acceleration as the gradient of a v–t graph.
- Calculate distance as the area under a v–t graph.
- Use your results to judge road safety (speed limits).
🧭 What to do
- Tap Play the ride and watch the speedometer and the distance posts.
- Look at the data table: speed is recorded every 2 seconds.
- In Analyse a part of the ride, choose t₁ = 0 s and t₂ = 10 s. Read the gradient and the area.
- Move the times to study the constant-speed part, the braking and the bump.
- Answer the investigation questions. Use 💡 Hint before 📘 Method.
- Write your conclusion and download your lab report.
📋 The data
Smoothed speed readings (m/s) every 2 s from a phone GPS app. Realistic data made for learning.
🧠 Investigate: answer from the data
Type your answer and tap Check. Use 💡 Hint first; open the method only when you are stuck.
